KEYLOR NAVAS AND THE PARIS SAINT GERMAN EXPERIENCE
I recently had the privilege to attend PSG vs Monaco in a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Parc Des Prince on a beautiful January evening. In a riveting first half performance, Neymar scored a hattrick, but Monaco fought back to tie the game at 3-3. The atmosphere was lovely throughout the game with the excitement rising ever higher when Neymar or Mbappe were on the ball. Overall, the match experience was great with an excellent stadium and a competitive game.
As a goalkeeper I arrived early to watch the warmups and was not disappointed as Keylor Navas demonstrated exquisite technique and amazing ability as he prepared for the game. I always felt that Navas was not given the credit he deserved while at Real Madrid for years of steady and often dazzling performances. At PSG Navas seems to have found home in a place where he is appreciated.
Even though Navas was scored on three times, he a made an excellent kick save in a one-on-one situation in the first half when Monaco was up 2-1 in a crucial moment of the game. Moreover, watching his warmup and his style of play has provided further insight into methods to adopt in training. One drill that stands out in his warmup was a diving progression from which Navas worked forward while palming a bouncing service back to the goalkeeper coach’s chest. The team at Goalkeeping 365 has since tried out this drill and found it to be an excellent way to improve diving technique. Furthermore, this drill offers a great chance to work on deflecting a ball and improving that skill. Check out our attempt to recreate the drill below and Keylor Navas working on it in his warmup. In conclusion, the PSG experience was breath-taking with a talented attack and an amazing goalkeeper.
