CATCHING PROGRESSION: PART ONE

Follow along as we will be posting a series of catching progression videos on our blog over the next few months.

The first part of this series has the goalkeeper start on their knees with the goalkeeper coach 6-8 yards away. The goalkeeper coach serves volleys in or slightly above the goalkeeper’s chest repetitively. Another option for the service is for the goalkeeper coach to toss the ball in underhanded or to strike the ball from the ground aiming at the chest.

The desired technique is for the goalkeeper to attack the ball by extending their hands. First contact should be made with the fingers then the palms. Furthermore, the goalkeeper should aim to make contact with the fingers on the upper portion of the ball, keeping their eyes on the ball the whole time and maintaining maximum focus.

This drill provides an excellent opportunity to work on catching technique and to improve your game. Additionally, this drill is applicable for all ages from beginners to professionals goalkeepers such as Manuel Neuer, Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Alisson Becker, Keylor Navas, Yann Sommer, Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon who have perfected this technique.

We hope you enjoyed this post!
