TENNIS BALLS IN GOALKEEPER TRAINING: PART ONE

The use of tennis balls in goalkeeper training has become more and more frequent in the last ten years. At Goalkeeping 365 we love using tennis balls in training and believe that they perform two main functions during a training session. Firstly, tennis balls improve hand-eye coordination and can be used in a variety of different ways with services being tossed or hit with a racket either on a line in the air, bounced in, or hit in as a dipping shot. Secondly, tennis balls serve the purpose of making training harder by requiring a greater amount of focus and a smaller object to save. Goalkeepers should always be looking for ways to challenge themselves in training with the use of tennis balls being an excellent tool to improve your game.

Furthermore, at Goalkeeping 365 we believe that the best drills using tennis balls also incorporate soccer balls with the drill in focus today from Goalkeeping Development possessing that combination. In the drill below, the goalkeeper starts 4-5 yards above their line on their knees with tennis balls tossed in at a mid-level height. After two saves are made, the goalkeeper quickly back pedals getting set for the incoming shot. Three shots are taken in quick succession either to the goalkeeper’s right or left. Overall, this drill provides a great chance to incorporate tennis balls into training in a real game scenario of moving backwards into position and quickly getting set before making a save.

We hope you enjoyed this blog. Stay tuned for part two on tennis balls which will be coming out in two weeks!
